21 April 2014
When we woke up in our lovely warm room at Cashel Lodge (check out our experience HERE), Billy felt worse than he had the day before. BUMMER. We got dressed, packed, and trundled down to the car. We weren’t sure if we would carry through with our plans for the day, but we figured we’d drive to the first attraction and decide once we got there.
Well, we got there. We took a picture of the castle. And we left. Unfortunately, sometimes that’s just how things go! Ultimately, we decided that sacrificing a day’s worth of sightseeing so that Billy could get well was better than having a worse overall trip because he was still sick. So in this post, you’ll see the things we were SUPPOSED to do, followed by what we actually did. Enjoy!
Cahir Castle
First off, look at this castle:
The fact that we drove away from this bad boy proves how crummy Billy was feeling. He adores medieval castles and this one looked impressive. For a bit of background, construction on Cahir Castle started in 1142 and has sections ranging from the 13th-15th centuries. It has withstood sieges and bombardments, falling into capture a total of three times during its history, with only one of those captures being by force.
If you’re interested in visiting, you can check out more details here. Take in the castle on your own or take one of the available guided tours. We’ve definitely put this back on our list! Billy nearly died as I read him the history. He never really knew what we missed because I didn’t have the heart to tell him. I think a quick trip to Ireland will be in our future!
Kanturk Castle
Kanturk Castle was next on our list. Not really what we’d consider a castle; it’s more so a fortified house. But whatever you’d like to call it, it never actually served its purpose. Construction stopped before it was completed and it sat unfinished exactly as it sits today. It’s free to visit if you’re up for seeing it!
Next, we should have been headed to a campsite to set up for the night, but just like everything else, that didn’t pan out either.
What Actually Happened
We at least drove by the Cahir Castle, but that was the only thing we quasi stuck to. We bypassed Kanturk Castle completely and pushed on to Killarney to have lunch and find a place to stay. Instead of a tent pitch, we found a B&B for the night. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any other pictures for the day and I never wrote down where we stayed. I did, however, document that we went shopping. While I can’t tell you where we shopped, I can tell you what we bought! Billy bought an Ireland zip-up hoodie and a Christmas ornament (a little tradition we have), and I bought a bottle of perfume called Inis Moonlight. It is the only perfume I wear and I love it!
After our bit of time out shopping, we spent the rest of the day resting at the B&B. Sometimes you’ve just got to roll with the punches. With endless hot tea and a TV to keep us occupied, we cuddled up with hopes for a better day when we woke in the morning.
Cheers,
Lydia and Billy
