Let’s face it. Going home after an incredible adventure has a lot of mixed feelings. On the one hand, we were NOT ready to leave. There was still so much left to see and I (Lydia) had such an intense feeling of coming home and belonging when we’d arrived in Ireland. On the other hand, funds were running low and we felt the need to get back home and get to work. Mostly so we could save up enough for another adventure but get back to work nonetheless. So, a little begrudgingly, we got up on the morning of 6 May, called a taxi, and headed to the airport. Hello, travel day.

Starting our travel day with sad faces. We aren't ready to leave!

Now Boarding

Would you like to know a fun fact? If you fly out of Dublin Airport and are heading to the US, you can go through customs in Dublin Airport before boarding your flight out. That’s pretty awesome! We didn’t consider that we had a layover at Heathrow in England, meaning we had to do customs in the US. You can only do customs at Dublin Airport if you have a direct flight to the US, so keep that in mind!

To be honest, I didn’t write about this day in our travel journal and there are only a few things I really remember. First, the people at Dublin Airport and Heathrow were so incredibly nice. They were happy to see you and asked about your stay. They were chatty and cheerful and made us feel great!

Second, the people in Chicago were the exact opposite. Everyone was angry and yelling, shouting at every turn. Welcome home.

Welcome Home

After a long travel day, we are finally back in Austin, TX.

We finally arrived in Austin, TX, at around midnight. Both of us were absolutely exhausted and ready for a bed! We stepped outside and immediately started sweating. It was in the 70s and the humidity was unreal. It seems we had adjusted quite well to the constant days of 55 degree Ireland!

Our 27 days in Ireland were finally at a close as day 28 brought us back home. Our immediate plan? Work, save, repeat.
Cheers,
Lydia and Billy
